Today it finally happened. She sat there looking unhappy with me, but I began to remove the ornaments anyway. Once the lights were off, I removed its top. By the time there were only a few branches left, she had licked her lips in disapproval several times; now she was glaring at me.

A plea for mercy

I left her to her own thoughts, and rummaged around in the basement to find an old rug. I returned, and carefully placed the folded rug in the center of the bay window. Hmmm. She pondered it. Then she walked over and sniffed. She carefully sat down upon it and sniffed some more. Then she turned and looked out the window, ignoring me. I slipped the last remnant of Christmas out of the room and tossed it into the laundry.
Success. The books are back in the bay window, and although we’ve been doing school for some time since the holidays ended, it now looks more official. Now she sits between the teacher’s manuals and flashcards.
Life is good!
