Thoughts from my Big Green Chair

Psalm 74:16-17 “The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon. It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.” NIV

This Psalm begins and ends with the cries of the Psalmist: “Why have you rejected us?” “Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?” “Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the folds of your garment and destroy them!” “Rise up, O God, and defend your cause…” Then smack-dab in the middle of it all comes, “You, O God, are my king from of old; you bring salvation upon the earth,” and he speaks of God’s creating the sun and moon, summer and winter.

When I go outside to take in the beauty of the daytime and the glory of the starry nights, I am reminded of who it is who is in control of my world. How perfectly he placed the earth so that we would have both summer and winter! The moon rises and sets with rhythmic perfection—so much so that in January our astronomy club was able to set the dates for our meetings throughout the year so that the moon would not get in the way of our viewing.

Did you know that each element in the Periodic Table “catches” only certain wavelengths of light? So if we want to know what elements are in the outer atmosphere of a star, we can collect its light in a telescope, refract it into a spectrum, take a picture of its “rainbow”, and see what wavelengths are “missing” in the photo.

And we think that he is not taking care of the details of our own lives…?
